Interview of Benjamin Cosson

Could you introduce yourself a little, talk a bit about your background?

I'm 33, I work in the nuclear industry and practice photography out of passion. I learned the technique by attending a forum dedicated to the photo (www.forumophoto.fr). I learned a lot and progressed alongside other experienced photographers. At first I photographed everything, architecture, graphics, portraits, landscapes ... Today, I try to photograph women with my sensitivity, my personality.

When, how and why did you begin to make photography?

I practice since 2006, I came across a film camera belonging to my wife with some black and white film. Naturally, I took pictures of my wife naked, the desire to highlight the female body was already there. The film is not at all been fairly immediat! I quickly bought my first DSLR. Digital technology has allowed me to progress faster. There are a little over a year I also discovered the practice through instant by Wilfried Haillot, I fell in love with the process.

What do you like in this form of expression?

It allows me to satisfy my need to create, develop myself. When I do not do pictures for a while, I feel bad.
It is also much more expressive to me than literature, painting or music. I feel even more things face to a photograph.

What are the themes that you like to photograph?

I make very few photos in the end, mainly work on the female body and a few self-portraits. I have a real admiration for the female body, it fascinates me. The female body and its curves express a lot to me, sweetness, fragility, beauty, sensuality, graphics, voluptuousness ...

What are you looking to share through your photography?

I express anything very personal when I photograph women, at most I reveal the way I look at them. I witness of their beauty, their softness, their sensuality and I try in my photos to bring out all that. If there is one thing I would like to share is that all women, no physical distinction, are entitled to express their sensuality in front of a camera. The photographer must succeed this work to highlight the charms of his model.

What is your idea of sensuality?

Sensuality, that is what the female body refers me. It is an attitude, it's a curve, it's a movement, it is a light warming a body, this is a garment suggesting a share of nudity, It is the gaze, it's the skin ...

What photographers fascinate and / or inspire you?

I have very little photographic culture. Sometimes I am ashamed and I think that's probably also what prevents me from even take the next step in my photographic practice. I was fascinated by the photographic series by Dominique Issermann, devoted to Laetitia Casta I could admire at the European House of Photography in 2012 This series is perfect, it meets sensuality, purity, design and beauty. I would like to produce such work.

How do you prepare a session of shooting?

Generally, I work a lot on instinct. My practice of the photo is no exception to this rule. That does not prevent me to prepare a photo session. I work with the model, I love the person participates, she proposes, she causes. I'm leaving on a main idea, an accessory, and after everything is permitted. It is not often that I go away from my original idea to arrive at an unexpected photo that proves great. I trust in my instincts, but also to luck that I cause. Above all, I forbid me anything!

What (s) camera (s) do you use ?

I use the past few years a Canon EOS 5DII, it suits me perfectly. I like the 85mm for its finesse and to report to the model, not too close or too far. I recently discovered the Lensbaby, which supports a shifting lens causing an additional blurring. It's very creative! It reminds of the work I've seen with large format camera. I probably will come one day. I also use instant Polaroid cameras, one SX70 (a gift from my wife), a fantastic camera, beautiful and gives the feel of working with a camera that has a soul. Keep the photo in his hand a few minutes after taking it is a unique sensation!

What (s) techniques do you prefer?

Regardless of the technique to me. The important thing is the result!
I have a special affection for the snapshot because there is a certain magic in the process.
But my recent discovery of Lensbaby opens me a new path that I will explore with pleasure.
I love the rendering of the tilt on large format camera as I have discovered in the work of Jérémie Mazenq.

How and why did your photography changed?

It was two years ago, when I began snapshot photography, I discovered a more demanding practice. The films are sometimes capricious, It is necessary to be up to it. It made me realize that I could be more demanding in my practice of digital photography.

What brings you the internet media?

It's a fantastic tool, it allows me to give some visibility to my work. To keep my photos alive is very important to me through exhibitions or sharing online. I do not like to know that my pictures on my computer sleep. In all humility, they can probably provoke emotions in someone somewhere and if I can do it, I'm delighted.
It is also a way to find models! Because without a model, I do not do pictures. It starts getting easier for me to find models willing to pose for the nude. The nude is still frowned upon in our society and it is not always easy to take nude pictures, especially for models. Nudity is still all there was more natural, We are born in this way … aren’t we ?
I communicate a lot via the internet mainly for my practice of photography. And some relationships have led to real encounters.

What do you expect from a website like Sensual Photography?

The fact of presenting only sensual photography is an asset, its strength. He treats me most and selection that is made is very qualitative.
It allows me to share my work with passionate people who move in the same register.
I love the idea of the book SP, materializing photos photographers attending Sensual Photography.

What are your plans?

Go on and on practice. Find models, I will extend my research. I would also like to work regularly with curvy women, with generous shapes, far too often formatted body measurements.
I have some projects to give them concrete, specific ideas for which I need models.
The road is long but so nice, practice photography is a real joy!

What would you add?

I would like to say thank you to all the women. You inspire me and you are beautiful.
Thank you to all those who posed for me and will pose for me!
Thank you and congratulations to you Sensual Photography!
