Interview of Ilona Friederici

Could you introduce yourself a little, talk a bit about your background?

I was born in 1969 and one day I arrived in the city of Düsseldorf. This is where I live since 2008. Originally, I wanted to make art and archeology studies (and somehow, this desire has remained inside of me), but as is often the case in life, things have turned out differently. I followed a traditional curriculum and many events happened in my life. In 2009, I started doing photography. The latest project I completed is a small studio where I offer photographs and shooting sessions.

When, how and why did you begin to make photography?

I started photography because I was looking for myself. It was in 2009, after some initial experiments with mirrors, I then used a mobile phone. It was my first camera.

What do you like in this form of expression?

My photos reflect above all the emotion, beauty, fragility and strength of the people I photograph. Similarly, in my self-portraits, I show myself as I am at this particular moment of the day. To see, feel and be attentive to the other. Photography is the art form that suits me the best.

What are the themes that you like to photograph?

I quickly realized that my images were a part of me and the people I was photographing. This is essential and I could not work otherwise. When I travel, I take my Iphone, its discretion is a vital asset. This limits me of course, but at least people do not pay attention.

What are you looking to share through your photography?

In my pictures, I share my world, my feelings, my desires, my perceptions. Beauty or how I see the world in all sincerity.

What is your idea of sensuality?

Sensuality, for me, that's life, it is the emotion, the time of a moment or a fraction of a second. It's that je ne sais quoi in every being that makes him unique. It's beautiful to be able to perceive it ...

What photographers fascinate and / or inspire you?

No photographer in particular inspires me. I see and learn by looking at pictures, but these are the people, their faces and what I guess beyond that inspire me.

How do you prepare a session of shooting?

I prepare my equipment and that's all. The rest gradually falls into place. It is important to meet several times so that the trust is established. Then begins sharing and something new arises.

What (s) camera (s) do you use ?

I use for digital photography a Nikon D700, for film a Nikon FE, a Pentacon Six TL and a Polaroid 330.

What (s) techniques do you prefer?

Digital and film.

How and why did your photography change?

I am self-taught, as and as I learn, my photography is changing too. I am less obliged to focus on technique and it allows me to make more images. Currently, I especially like working with film and develop my photos myself and make quality prints. It is an activity which allows to touch, to feel what we make and that … that cannot be shared by Internet!

What brings you the internet media?

Internet helps me to find an audience in my images. This allows me to show my photographs to be seen and also to establish contacts with extraordinary people.

What do you expect from a website like Sensual Photography?

Sensual Photography is a wonderful website that gives me the opportunity to share a common passion with other photographers and discover what their approach to sensuality is. I feel proud to participate in this site.

What are your plans?

I have a project that I would finalize next year and if possible to publish at the end of the year, a book of the series of images taken with film.
I would have my own exhibition one day in another country.

What would you add?

In the menu « Select your language » : German ;-)
